Current Employee – been working at Con-way full-time for more than a year
Pros – Con-way offers impeccable training, great networking opportunities, significant opportunities for the development of transferable skills, great opportunities for advancement if one is of a certain demographic, a free on-site doctor and RN, a strong Management in Training program, the "Alpha" Program, and sustainable/efficient/"thin" operations that provide significant job security.
Cons – Con-way's pitfalls include below-average salaries; backward, conservative culture (slowly progressing); the "old guard" of "good ole' boys;" lack of advancement opportunities for women; lack of commiserate compensation for highly skilled and educated employees; an acute focus on "seat time" and tenure instead of skills, ability, potential, and results; lackluster healthcare and insurance at certain divisions; and the lack of a tuition reimbursement program for both undergrad and graduate degrees.
Advice to Senior Management – Develop an advantageous tuition reimbursement program; recruit and adequately compensate young, intelligent, and capable college graduates to train and retain; Improve transparency and flow of information; focus on creating a lean culture based on trust, respect, education, and open communication; improve talent development and create career paths for elite, young employees; improve retention of valuable young employees; allow employees to gain experience and exposure through lateral and vertical career moves; reward top performers instead of focusing on salary equality for all, regardless of skill, education, experience, and performance; and embrace technology.
