It seems as though I found the most vindictive group of middle managers on Earth.

    Pros

Compensation is generally good if you have an engineering degree.

    Cons

Variable compensation is tied more to company performance against industry peers than individual performance. Employee ranking system rewards favorites via subjective ranking and results in poor morale throughout. Two employees in the same group shared their rankings with me. One was given a promotion and high ranking. The other was given a poor ranking and severed the following month. The severed employee was always working, got along well with others and was recognized in the industry as an expert in his field. The employee that was promoted spent the majority of his time on Facebook and Craig's List...and is now in middle management.

Management at ConocoPhillips doesn't take advice. No need to offer it here.

I have been working at ConocoPhillips

    Pros

COP is among the best energy companies to work for: competitive salary range, good opportunities for advancement, solid benefits

    Cons

New hires often get first rotation opportunities and some high level management positions seem to rotate quickly (within 1 or 2 years). How can they have acquired adequate experience. Meanwhile, mid level experienced employees are effectively "sandwiched" and wait to rotate to new jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Repositioning was pushed on a short timeline. Time will tell if this was a good decision by management.
