I have been working at Conservation International full-time for less than a year

Pros

Scientific, policy, and corporate sustainability expertise from all over the globe; diversity; passionate staff; flexible work hours and location; competitive salary and benefits

Cons

Large organization means that individual achievements can be lost; strong personalities and competitiveness for funding and work within the organization; entrenched leadership that is somewhat out of touch with the day-to-day

Advice to ManagementAdvice

CI's achievements over its 25 year history have been remarkable, but significant organizational change (new mission, vastly expanded staff and reach) mean that it runs more like a large company than a small NGO, this is going to require adaptation and focus on improving cross-divisional team management to improve efficiency, reduce conflict, and improve staff morale

My experience at CI was largely positive--incredibly knowledgeable staff and leadership, and collegial atmosphere.

    I worked at Conservation International

    Pros

Conservation International is a dynamic organization with a compelling mission and an open, respectful, globally-minded corporate culture. There's a high level professionalism across all parts of the organization but the culture also recognizes the importance of maintaining a work/life balance. There are many employees who have worked at CI for five or more years.

    Cons

Even though CI is very good at promoting from within, early career professionals (those 2-5 years out of school) have fewer opportunities for career advancement within the organization. It's not uncommon for employees at those tiers to advance by moving to a different part of the organization. Also, opportunities vary by department because some stay relatively static for years and others do not.
