I worked at Conservation International full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Great benefits. Flexible work schedule. Green organization. Strong mission in a critical area. Strong IT support.

Cons

Senior management is out-of-touch and showing up for a staff meeting every couple of months is insufficient. High turnover in senior positions with many vacancies lasting for months and even years. Too much time spent in planning and documenting what is allegedly accomplished. Cutting back of field programs. Lack of diversification in funding sources and limited growth in new donors. Promotion of mid-level employees with minimal experience to senior positions affects the organization's ability to achieve its mission. Stagnation of promotions for qualified employees at the levels below Vice President.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a critical look at the organization and stop being cheerleaders about how great everything is. Strengthen your Human Resources and Fundraising functions. Refine your funding model as it is unsustainable.
