I have been working at Consumer Reports full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Talented people, nice cafeteria, test-sample auctions

Cons

New management is incompetent, uncaring, and sometimes cruel.
Management uses the threat of layoff or firing to motivate employees to do more in less time and with fewer resources.
Co-workers are stressed out, fearful of being next to get the axe.
Lying is considered valuable in interoffice communication; it is only a matter of time before this lack of ethics makes its way into the publication.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat workers like human beings.

I have been working at Consumer Reports full-time

    Pros

The staff that does the testing and actually creates the products is dedicated and terrific, if unheralded. Good benefits, though eroding. May still be a reasonable place to work if you're a test engineer or in IT.

    Cons

Zero accountability for some senior managers, a few of whom are lacking in conscience. They have license to do just about anything they want to those below. E.g. They recently fired CR's chief editor without cause, with the blessing of both HR and the CEO. There's widespread fear among day to day staffers that any of them could be next. If this is the kind of place you'd like to work, good luck!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Board of Directors: Get your heads out of the sand and learn the truth about the goings on in the organization by speaking directly with rank and file. Then remove those responsible at the top who have ruined what was once a proud and admirable organization. Restore integrity, honesty, and competence to CR's management.

CR Protects The Consumer, But Doesn't Do the Same For Their Employees.

I have been working at Consumer Reports full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Current CEO is exiting which will bring in new management. Employees can purchase tested products at a small discount.

    Cons

The cons are many but center on a clueless CEO who is more advocate than business visionary. Countless senior leadership has been shuffled in and out in hopes of turning around business. Layoffs are constant and happen monthly and without logic. Business model of paid content is flawed with competition closing in with no innovation and new products coming from the organization. New employees be very skeptical of the environment as the financial health of the company is eroding. The direct marketing model on the business side is failing the organization, product management cannot deliver new product, new COO is a finance guy with no experience running a digital organization, and rating content has become a commodity. The print side is as good as dead. Union environment cuts staff in half and offers no real value. Salaries are below average and benefits are eroding. As an employer, CR has become cut throat firing at will and re-shuffling without any logic or results. The cons are numerous and for an organization founded on protecting the consumer, CR should wake up and protect their employees from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire real leaders, get rid of the board of directors and current CEO who are both clueless, innovate and move faster with real digital products.
