I have been working at Convio

Pros

Convio has a mission which is worthy of the effort we put into. It feels good to help non-profit organization.

Cons

Some groups are too tied into the way things are done. Internal change is hard. Management relies on the good old boy network to make missions. If you are not part of the network, your view is not wanted.

decide on what important and staff appropriately.

Overall positive, but people tend to "fit the mold" and "play it safe."

    I worked at Convio

    Pros

It's easy to justify working here because the clients are non-profits. That's one thing. The people, in general, are really great to work with too. There are no crazy egos or anything like that.

    Cons

It's not a very "challenge the norm" culture. People tend to play it safe. Being nice and likeable is almost more important than being creative and innovative.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people take risks. Stop playing safe. And foster a culture where people are not afraid to make mistakes.

    I worked at Convio

    Pros

Opportunity to work with some great nonprofit organizations. Chance to learn about the inner workings and organizational dynamics of young company. Will learn a lot (though most will be self-taught) about best practices in email marketing and website development.

    Cons

Exceptionally poor communication among senior executives. Lack of internal promotion to senior positions (many new VPs and Senior Directors are external hires from large enterprises like Dell). Not much opportunity to explore different skills or positions...you're stuck in your position with little support for learning or experimenting with new ideas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Groom your internal people to take higher level positions instead of hiring outside every single time. Openly encourage employees to learn new skills and apply them to their work.
