Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Seattle, WA
Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Seattle, WA

I worked at Corbis full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

First, until recently, the company attracted very talented technology resources (unfortunately, as inside stories are coming out, this may be one the decline). Second, the company owns motion and still content that museums and competitors would die for (and I am sure our founder paid a fortune for). Last and not least, the sole shareholder/benefactor has as deep pockets as it gets and the wherewithal to standby the proposition.

Cons

Other reviewers have pointed out the incompetence of IT leadership. I can't improve upon it, except to say it is only the top IT gal and the head of each department under her, except operations, that needs to be replaced by competent people.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

First order of business, please stop the bloodletting, that is, letting go of the most senior people. Second, go beyond copying competition; be the leader that you are! Finally, for God's sake, buy a text book on management; all the advise you need is already in the text book ( or hire a couple of MBA's).

I worked at Corbis full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Some very nice people work there.
    Nice building.
Some good coffee and food in the area.
Easy to get to by bus, reasonable parking near by.

    Cons

Consistent restructures twice a year resulting in mass layoffs.
No vision, no direction, no accountability from the Sr. Leaders.
Makes the same mistakes over and over.
Lack of support for employees and career development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out what you do. 20+ years of constant instability and no direction, perhaps you've missed the point.

    I worked at Corbis full-time

    Pros

Private funding from a single owner
Lots of good people who work hard and try their best
    Up to date technology base

    Cons

Stock photography is a challenged field right now. Cheaper equipment in the hands of more people drives all the margins down, putting pressure on any company in this arena. But this simply exacerbates the problems that are systemic at Corbis with their unfocused and subpar leadership. They spend time on too many things without making real progress on any of them. There is little respect between business and technology. And the most recent layoff cut some of the strongest people in the company. Margins may require these types of cutbacks, but there appears to be no light at the end of this tunnel for anyone except senior management, who may get a bonus at the end of the year for meeting a short term target with no regard whatsoever for the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You make a lot of money selling the rights to Albert Einstein, but you neglect one of his most revered sayings: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Stop anything that hasn't made a profit. Throw everything into what has a chance to succeed. And stop jerking everybody around in the meantime.
