Current Employee - Registered Nurse in Atlanta, GA

I have been working at Corizon full-time for less than a year

Pros

This is a really nice place to work. Ihave worked in many different aspects of the nursing field and this by far is my favorite. If you can get past the fact that you are taking care of criminals in a jail, these are some of the reasons I like it here:
No micromanagement
Full support from management
Safe environment
Very laid back
Feels like working with your family
Everybody seems nice
Doctors are onsite to give orders

Cons

You are locked in the facility
Can't bring your cellphone to work
Everyone is not fully knoweledgeable

Recommends
Positive Outlook
Approves of CEO

I have been working at Corizon full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Some jobs do pay very well.

    Cons

Upper management doesn't have a clue. Too many lies are being told and they refuse to stop

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue! The place sucks since the merger and almost everyone is looking for a job!!!

Current Employee - "Midlevel"  in  Lansing, MI
Current Employee - "Midlevel" in Lansing, MI

I have been working at Corizon full-time

    Pros

Easy to leave your job 'at work', No productivity pressures.

    Cons

1)Notion all providers are the same (except for pay). There is no tirage. Primary care/family practice NPs and PAs are expected to see and manage the most medically complex patients that come through the doors (patients with multiple chronic comorbidities...AIDS, CHF, renal and liver failure) while the internal med physicians are getting paid more than twice as much and may be seeing someone with a history of asthma as a child and no other medical issues.
    2) Not NP/PA friendly. As a "midlevel" you will see more patients than the physicians and more complex patients than the physicians (who have no other medical director responsibilities) and get paid less than half. You have to have 10 charts reviewed for punctuation per month while physicians have no peer review at all.
3)This more applies to the correctional health in general... Almost every patient you will ever see wil ask you for narcotics, benzos, extra mattresses, personal shoes,...You will see more patients who abuse prescription drugs on the outside than who abuse illegal drugs, and they feel entitled to get them in prison so they can be quite argumentative when you say no.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to understand the concept of 'scope of practice' and triage. Expecting your providers to have to care for patients outside of their scope of practice is dangerous, causes lawsuits, and bad patient outcomes. Figure out a way to incentivize efficiency and productivity rather than rewarding lazyness. There are providers who easilly see more than 15 complex patients in an 8 hour day who make less than providers who see 4 simple patients per day because you are paying the laziest prividers as much overtime as they want. I see this every day at my site... providers hanging out well into the evening doing absolutely nothing but sitting in front of their computer collecting overtime and chatting it up. Their excuse is "well I'm just slow"...Privatization is supposed to solve this problem by eliminating these types of unneccesary employees and expenses. Drop the term "Midlevel" (its offensive).
