I worked at Corning full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay scale, compensation and benefits are excellent.

    Cons

Too many Chiefs and not enough Indians. Too many middle managers along with top managers who are not sure which end is up. Often notice 'micro-managing' happening also.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember the core values you tell all incoming employees about during their orientation periods. Many 'managers' and 'department heads' tend to forget them. The most important one is to 'value the individual'. Times change and just because 'it's been done this way for years' doesn't hold up any longer. Innovation is the key to success and even the 'lower' employees can see issues with processes that need updating or tweaking. Do away with your PD&R yearly assessment. I have been told BY MANAGERS it is nothing but a POPULARITY CONTEST. If the department staff like you, you will get a good review that will related to a merit increase. It is not based upon job performance like it should be. Talent is lost when this happens. Worry about the job instead of the people. If the job is done, the people are good. If the job is not done, then the people are are not good. Listen to those doing the job also as they are doing it every day and can tell you what the problem may be.

Former Employee - Research Scientist in Corning, NY

I worked at Corning full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

good health benefit, good for new graduate to have some industry experience, after that, it's such a small town without any other opportunities.

    Cons

lack of career growth, upper management is not willing to invest time and efforts in your professional growth. Not willing to provide trainings to expand your skillsets. No clear picture of where division go. If economy is not good, individual contributors are first ones to let-go, not decision-maker !

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

should have a clear picture where division goes and what they do, do not wait around expect magic happens to research and make money. research and business is somewhat disconnected, you should let business drives research not research drives business. Individual contributors are ones who should be valued, often times, decision makers are ones who made the wrong decision of doing which projects, that were not making money for company. No clear sense of planning in research. please put the right leader (who have knowledge and quality) in the right place.
