I have been working at Corrections Corporation of America full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

CCA provides upward mobility for the motivated and excellent employee, and good basic jobs for those with less motivation and ambition.

Cons

The wages are fairly low for the level of responsibility that is given.
Communication of facility issues on a strictly "need to know" basis is very frustrating. One feels very disconnected from the workings of the prison when one's only resource for news is the "grapevine."

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent about news and happenings in your facilities. Get rid of the minority of employees who don't care and who treat inmates poorly.

    Pros

Unlimited overtime money to be made

    Cons

No breaks, no lunch or dinner breaks, no bathroom breaks, no water, can work 12 to 18 hours a day without any kind of breaks, no protection from inmate attacks, no holidays, all management is cold and uncaring

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Corrections Corporation of America full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

You form a close "family" type bond with your coworkers (especially the ones you go through training with), the leadership is very supportive (in most places), and just about an unlimited supply of OT (unfortunately a majority of it is mandatory).

    Cons

A LOT of favoritism and double standards, you can't leave without relief (you'll find out about 30 minutes before the end of your shift whether you're working an extra 4 or not), not a good selection if you enjoy spending time with your family, and expect an average of at least 1-2 16 hour days per week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to your officers and their needs. This is a safety sensitive job, and when we are worn down and burned out, it can affect more than you think.
