I have been working at Corus Entertainment

    Pros

The location is in downtown Toronto, in a community with similar values. The work environment is very casual, such that employees are allowed to wear jeans to work (as long as the overall look is somewhat professional). Corus is a leader in promoting the environment; they are having a new facility built in accordance to LEED environmental standards. There are some perks that they started recently, such as summer hours.

    Cons

Salaries are below industry standards for a media company. In terms of opportunity, it is fairly low for career advancement. The health benefits are below industry standards. But especially, they do not invest in their employees. There is no emphasis in learning more as they do not offer courses, which is fairly standard for the industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in your employees and provide them with reasons to stay.

I have been working at Corus Entertainment as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to upgrade your skills with free training. And you can learn from co-workers if you make the effort. Company also has great benefits package if you are lucky enough to get a full time job, not contract as so many positions are now.

    Cons

Chronically understaffed. Major layoff in 2013 and several individual layoffs since have left virtually every department shorthanded. Be prepared to work overtime/at home. Poor work/life balance. Particularly unfriendly to women, a bit of an old boy's culture at the top. Also, the work environment at the new building is too open plan, very distracting and absolutely no privacy. Also not easy to get to by transit and parking is expensive and hard to get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more permanent staff. Consider your employees as much as you consider the quarterly earnings for stock holders.
