I worked at Costco Wholesale

Pros

Costco has a very good starting hourly rate in this economic "depression". The 1-1/2 time pay rate for Sundays is awesome! Managers generally will leave you alone if you simply do your job & fly low under the radar...And it is certainly nice to get the free membership cards for yourself & your family.

Cons

The warehouse is freezing cold in the winter and blazing hot in the summer! Managers tend to get nit-picky about certain meaningless items, such as what type of shoes you can wear. The job can be a bit repetitive, and some of the customers can truly be obnoxious...

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more flexible in adjusting work schedules - specifically the 20-hour / 3 day minimum per week rule. Part time means part time, but the company is very strict as to the minimum hours one can work...

    Pros

It is a place where mostly motivated, kind employees work together and make you feel like part of the team.

    Cons

The hours may not fit everyone's schedule. The daytime shifts go to employees with quite a bit of seniority. At some stores you might have to work for years to get the schedule you prefer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't expect the department managers are communicating with employees.

Costco treats their workers right, and in turn, creates a great environment for employees, vendors, and customers alike.

I have been working at Costco Wholesale

    Pros

Costco, in general, can be a fantastic place to work for. The management, be it local or corporate, is friendly and makes a die-hard effort to hire and keep good workers. Costco only promotes from within, so the management is not only well trained, but opportunities to move up are available to everyone. The pay, in balance to the benefits package available to all full and part time workers, is second to none, especially in areas which most work is only available in bigger cities. Costco also a fun company to work for. Typically, there is an employee club which runs events all year for their employees to enjoy, such as fun holiday parties, or simple movie nights. Perhaps the best thing about Costco Wholesale is the fact that they are dependable and secure in troubled times. They are honest and straight-forward to their workers about how any sort of "recession" will be handled. In recent months, with many worker's hours being cut to help make up low sales, Costco is still giving workers their full benefits, even if they are not meeting the minimum requirements. Costco makes a great effort to keep and help their employees, and even urges employees to ask for help if its needed.

    Cons

Some of the downsides of being an employee at Costco Wholesale is that the experience varies depending on the location. Some locations are unionized, and others are not, so a transfer from one location to another may be jarring. Other warehouses tend to have management that may not fit the "open-door" ideals that Costco Corporate encourages. Employees that have worked for Costco for many years are next-to-impossible to fire. This can be good for the good employees. However, the bad stays too. An example being that an employee who is consistently tardy, slacks off, rude to customers, or more, can still keep their job only because they've worked for Costco for 3 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management typically does a great job. They are fair to those that deserve fairness, and make reasonable decisions. The only thing I would recommend is that they be more aware of those who do not pull their weight, and recognize more those who go above and beyond.
