Current Employee - Cashier Assistant (Front End Assistant) in Issaquah, WA
Current Employee - Cashier Assistant (Front End Assistant) in Issaquah, WA

I have been working at Costco Wholesale full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Opportunity for advancement - most are promoted from within - very good benefits, strong community presence and reputation, steady growth, great people, option of moving to locations worldwide, respect for diversity

Cons

Inconsistent communication (in warehouses) with little access to educational opportunities, mainly if not a supervisor or manager, inconsistent and inflexible work schedules, little encouragement and mentoring from management, high potential for physical injury due to large, heavy merchandise and often frenetic pace

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Jim has always stressed "growing our employees" - at the warehouse level - supervisor and below at least, there is very little guidance/education provided to employees in regard to career options and paths, company philosophy regarding merchandising, and access to accurate benefit explanation.

Current Employee - Front End Cashier in Seattle, WA

I have been working at Costco Wholesale part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Offers great benefits to its employees (Medical, Dental, 401K)
Promotes from within the company so all of your superiors were once at the bottom
Good introductory hourly wage (1.5X pay on Sunday)
    Flexible schedules for college students
    Very active work environment
Potential to move up to corporate
Good at handling with personal/health issues per employee

    Cons

    Workplace politics is very prevalent
Scheduling is inconsistent; sometimes get off at 10:30PM
Some managers will try to micromanage every process on the front end
Children of corporate employees always have the upper hand regardless of seniority
Managers are constantly changing the rules about procedures
A small portion of members feel that since they pay for a membership, the employees are somehow below them

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be fair and be consistent. All employees should be held to the same standards regardless of who their parents are or how long they have been there. Allowing longtime employees to be repeatedly rude to other coworkers and employees sets a bad example for new hires and makes for a bad work environment. Offer classes/seminars for employees to prepare for other positions.
