Costco Wholesale Cashier Assistant in Portland, OR:   (Current Employee)

Pros

The start pay for inexperienced employee is exceptionally high. Good place to build your resume and start a career.

Cons

Costco Wholesale is run by a union, meaning the least competent employee in the company may have power and will have better benefits over new employees just because he/she has worked there for a longer period of time. Managers does not know how to treat new employees humanely.

Advice to Senior Management

Micromanagement is key to creating a lasting firm.

by Ben:

Costco is not Union on a national scale. some warehouses are union but very few are. the statement that a new employee can not move up is totally false. I have worked there for 2 years and have seen old employee's get passed up but people who have been there for 3 years. Disreguard this review as is it probably from someone who got fired for doing something against corporate policy.

Most Costcos are nonunion. Costco does need to improve floor management and supervisors' treatment of employees and have consistent policies. Expectations are changed by the minute depending on which supervisor happens to be in charge at the front and they rotate continually!
