County of San Diego - A Secure Place to Work

I worked at County of San Diego

Pros

Great pension and job security. In many areas there are opportunities for advancement. It seemed that minorities or nontraditional employees, like myself, were treated more fairly than in private industry. The fact that the County is a stable employer and you know your benefits are secure is very helpful in minimizing anxiety about your families security. The other benefits, like dental and health insurance, access to 401 plan and 457 plan if you wanted them are also better than what you typically find. As employees age there did not seem to be any pressure to retire because you were becoming a senior citizen.

Cons

Pigeon holing people. Lack of respect for individuals. Failure to deal with performance issues in an honest and open manner.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more supportive of middle managers.

Best, Most Innovative County Government in the Nation; But Still, It IS County Government

I have been working at County of San Diego

    Pros

Locations throughout the County, generous salary and benefits packages are all enticing. Many employees find the breadth of County departments to be fulfilling; they will switch between 2-5 departments over the course of their careers with the County, engaging in services as diverse as Animal Services, Probation, Libraries, Tax Collector, Air Pollution Control, etc.

The County offers many interesting jobs and provides a lot of opportunity for career growth if you have the patience to work your way up to the requirements of each promotion or job classification. The County also offers a lot of training opportunities, and executive leadership is making a strong push towards more telecommuting and schedule flexibilty. The County of San Diego is the most-awarded County in the nation, is run by excellent executives, and is an excellent government organization.

    Cons

No matter how good of a government it is, the County is still GOVERNMENT. Therefore, some of the County's 17,000 employees are fairly useless and are your typical government employees just riding out their 20+ years so they can collect an amazing pension.

In addition, your experience with the County can really be hit-or-miss depending upon which department you land in. Some departments, such as County Libraries, are very forward-thinking and innovative, making use of new technologies and really engaging their employees, with a non-bureaucratic and accessible department head. The Health & Human Services Agency seems to be the most progressive at this time in terms of flexibility, job-sharing, hours and telecommuting. Other departments, such as Human Resources (as one might expect) are much more bureaucratic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Chief Administrative Office really, really gets it. They do an excellent job, as do the group-level general managers; the problems seem to begin at the department level, where one manager can really block the messages and advancement being promoted by the CAO and executive leadership.

I have been working at County of San Diego full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

As an employee, you do get a birthday holiday off, you also have benefits, which many people think are awesome but not really.

    Cons

The job positions pay very little and the give too many responsibilities to workers, if they at least match the pay with the work that would be wonderful, but most people don't earn enough to make a living...There are a few top positions for which not only do you need a college degree, but -many- years of experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do your best to hire more personnel, there is no way people will take such abuse for too long...people have to remember what it was like to have a job before the economy crashed...you can't exploit people forever...
