Pros

Some of the smartest and hardest working people work at Covance. The companies biggest assets are the people. Vacation and heath benefits are very good.

Cons

Top heavy company, management is selffish and not trained well for the job. The goal of the company is to find supervisors and managers who do not know daily activities, tasks or science. Their role is to "manage" people. Performance reviews are meaningless and unfair. People are chosen arbitrarily every year for improvement plans that allows the company not to pay out a bonus or increase salary.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up senior management and change strategy. There are too many zeros in your ranks! No one tells the truth and each manager muddles through until they get moved or promoted. The company is broken. You use your employees until they are burned out. You expect them to work late, early, weekends holidays and then you kick them during annual review time. The good managers leave the company our take demotions just so they don't have to the dirty deeds.

    Pros

very flexible for family, great training opportunities, company is well recognized by other companies, great starter job, feel like i can work almost anywhere after here

    Cons

unsupportive of employees desired career paths (for example if you want to be a development scientist they will train and prepare you to be one then transfer you to management or human resources even if you have no interest in that area), poor compensation in relation to other companies, managers did not seem to have much influence or control over developing their team of employees, high employee turnover

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

a lot of time and energy is put into training employees but no incentive is given to them to stay with the company. also during my 3 years the company went through 5 restructuring. it would have been a better place to work if a little more thought went into the shakeups and there was more time for the dust to settle in between major policy changes

    Pros

Work is interesting and there is a lot to learn, no two days are the same

    Cons

Overwork, failure to develop jpromising employees while favoring those who take advantage of those who carry the weight

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers need better training. As soon as management becomes marginally proficient in an area, they are exchanged with a manager in another area, so both areas are under stress while the employees do the management training.
