Pros

Great opportunities in the medical device area for using creativity to improve products and management. One could make major impacts by developing strategies which leap-frog competitors. The company is a stable place to work with strong attention paid to financial performance. Participation in healthcare market will temper up and downs of the economy.

Cons

Somewhat lacking in empowered strategies. Most strategies are focused on Wall Street impact, rather than building best businesses which out perform competitors. There will be a tendency to jump from one consultant formulated strategy to another. The company is mainly managed as a financially driven organization with limited long term strategies.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clarify the future for non-device division and move forward quickly. Develop stronger strategies at all levels with main focus on business units. Empower and hold accountable the business units for growth and execution of strategies.

    Pros

They promote from within and because there are so many jobs at this location you can move around and explore different departments. Job security is excellent because the Medical field is a secure industry to work in and the company is well managed.

    Cons

It is very hard to feel that you've made a difference or made improvements because of all the layers of management. You basically have to do what upper management wants and aren't allowed to make even small decisions. It is almost impossible to make a change because so many layers upon layers of executives have to approve even the smallest changes. No decisions ever get made executives just keep scheduling more meetings to discusss what might happen if a decision was made. I don't know how anything gets done everyone is afraid of making a mistake or taking responsibility for making a decision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Delegate responsibility don't micro manage. Eliminate some of the layers.

    I worked at Covidien

    Pros

Covidien has good products that provide a real benefit to the customer. In addition, the pay is good, and the amount of work is reasonable. Travel can be heavy at times, but it is usually reasonable. The underlying technologies are exciting and differentiable in the marketplace. R&D is well led and generally done well.

    Cons

Management does not provide effective leadership and direction, which contributes to inefficiency and frustration on the part of the staff. Marketing is a struggle as it doesn't have good talent across the team, has weak leadership that relies on the senior manager "idea du jour" instead of hard data to make decisions, and doesn't have sound marketing processes in place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on being leaders, not managers. Bring in talented marketers from outside who can implement good processes.
