I worked at Covidien full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

C-level employees have a plan; company does good things; very intelligent co-workers. They try to fix problems, not sweep them under the rug.

Cons

C-level employees do not share plans with employees; massive unplanned layoffs at old US Surgical and Valley Lab 2 months ago show this. While the business environment is changing, the rapid and continual changes in the company are confusing and demoralizing,

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just wait a month from change to change...too much, too often, too confusing.

Don't work as a Kelly Service Contractor for Covidien in Boulder, CO

I worked at Covidien as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Flex time, work at home, good employee work group, free coffee

    Cons

Boulder is made up of mostly interns, new college grads, many temp contractors and some regular employees. The people who work there are nice. There is a very high turn around and empty desks since there are many temp employees, new grads, and interns. People are often ask who was laid off or who found a new job? There has been many new changes with new VIP management and even the full time reg employees are not safe for employment. I would not recommend working as a contractor unless you are in between job searches. They don't hire someone from a contractor to a direct hire often and there is no promise that your contract will be as long as promised. There is also the new hire contractor game of trying to make yourself look better then the other because you MIGHT be hired on. You will be able to go to a few company functions but not many. The company picnic you will not be allow to go too or holiday party. I also think it is unfair not to be recoginised when a project is completed besides your contract is not being renewed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lay off people just to show stock holders a profit. If you hire temps to hire, don't leave them hanging on to a job 2-3 years to never be hired on. You should also have a clear direction of where you are going. Too bad the people who know your products are leaving your company and not coming back. Don't serve cake before laying off people just to sweeting them up.

I have been working at Covidien full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Medical products is stable. Exposure to a lot of different functions within the couple to develop skill sets.

    Cons

Limited opportunity for growth, pay is does not account for cost of living and in some cases below market value. Very high expectations and minimal direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Development should be a shared practice between the employee and manager. There is little support from management to progress your career.
