I worked at Cox Communications full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent benefits package, including 401K, pension possibilites, medical/dental/long & short term disability, life insurance, and of course their full package of Television, Internet, Phone and home security at a small fraction of retail cost.

    Cons

Cox Business has a less than colaborative inter-office culture with Cox outside account representaives most ardent competition their own Cox inside representatives in a dog-eat-dog mentality. Cox Business VP's look past the employee bickering and skirmishes as healthy competition while the yearly salesperson turn-over exceeds most any other industry salesperson turnover. Salepeople find themselves fired, quitting, or manuvering elsewhere within the company to survive. The Cox Business department is a 'CULT' with employees fearing reprisal telling you straight to your face how wonderful it is to work at Cox Business but cornered alone would tell a different, unhappy story regarding most of the employees within this group. In todays economic downturn, the ‘CULT’ mentality lives at a protected level, employees anxiety up, with very few options to find other jobs and many taking medical (mental) leave, searching job boards constantly, desperate to get out, but at the same time fearing losing their Cox income & benefits while enduring their position. Like a cult, the Cox Business perception is drummed into everyone, making it difficult to trust any other employee; hence no real cultural change to pursue.

    Advice to Management

Competiion is fearce in most any industry in which the salesperson is celebrated, lauded for their tenacity and accomplishments. Everyday sales people get beat-up by their customers, the wretched economy, out witted by compeating telecommunication/cable firms. The salesperson’s employer, their department should be their place to lick their wounds and heal. Cox Business having their inside sales representatives selling to the exact customers as their counterparts in the field, is like pouring salt in their wounds or kicking them in the teeth. There should certainly be a more collaborative effort, sharing commissions, and a separation of specific duties. Inside representatives should help drive the outside sales representative to areas, buildings and customers, in which the outside sales representative could the sell the clients and bring service. After service is established, outside representatives should have the first sales, REGARDLESS OF TIME. Then after a specified time and a number of signed clients, all other sales go to inside sales. This would eliminate most skirmishes, continually send outside sales people to new areas, and allow better collaboration.
