I worked at Crain Communications

Pros

Good pay and benefits, reasonable schedules, generous Paid Time Off. Good opportunities for internships and young journalists.

Cons

Opportunities for promotion and advancement can be somewhat limited, especially in the editorial departments. The company, like most media companies, is going through hard times and went through layoffs in 2009.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Crain Communications management needs to continue pursuing new media and web 2.0 opportunities, because new media is the future of the news business.

I have been working at Crain Communications

    Pros

A good work environment and leadership that seems to care about people, though in 2009 we've had a tough few months.

    Cons

It's privately held and cautiously managed at a time when companies, especially in publishing have to be taking some chances.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company needs to take a deep breath and dive into the online world because that's where the future is in publishing. In fairness, though, the entire publishing industry is moving very cautiously.

    Pros

    Private company. Family owned. Location.

    Cons

Not a training-focused organization. Very little professional development. Not a great place for advancement for women.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the environment for working women, esepcially mothers.
