I have been working at Cray as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

There are a lot of people willing to work with you. Since it is a smaller company you get to know most of the employees and work closely with them.

    Cons

It's a smaller company so one client could make or break the fiscall year. Needs more clients and deeper pockets, but that all depends on demand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the Systems Engineers and Systems Engineering software to have more organized way of developing the system from start to finish.

I have been working at Cray full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Interesting and challenging work. Many good people to work with.

    Cons

Inconsistent management that tries to run an engineering company like a assembly line. Cray expects employees to give 150%, but never seem to recognize this outside of a worthless "attaboy" now and then. Benefits keep decreasing, while compensation remains static and is below industry standard. The salary of the CEO is about 30-40 times that of the "average" employee. Cray is constantly promising product features that do not exist, and this causes engineering "fire drills" as we scurry around trying to add features. This reveals a very poor understanding of customer requirements/desires on the part of product management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are not interchangeable cogs. Don't treat them that way. Stop reducing benefits. Start increasing compensation. Stop talking about "product quality" and actually do something about it. Use only one system for tracking employee time accounting, not two or (believe it or not) even three in some cases. Enough already with the obsessive bean counting. Create a system that rewards employees for company success through stock grants. Bring back company 401K matching contributions. Cray's success so far is largely the result of the dedication of it's employees, and in spite of confused and ineffective product management. You should reward all employees for this, rather than just those on mahogany row.
