Current Employee - Senior 3D Artist in Frankfurt am Main (Germany)

I have been working at Crytek full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Lots of responsibility early on, freedom to do your own thing if you do it right (your mileage may vary). Best-in-industry tech and some of the most talented guys around in the office to learn from.

Cons

Sometimes too little guidance, creative process volatile, heavy focus on tech at expense of design. Bonus scheme not satisfactory compared to other game studios outside of europe.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask regular people more about feedback on directors or middle managment, they are mature enough to give objective assessments.

I worked at Crytek full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If you are fresh developer its the right place to learn because after all Crytek has still few good people.

    Cons

    Bad management.
They don't ask you to work late, they kick you in your nuts if you don't do it by your self.
Don't expect ever to get money or something like that after working 15h a day/ 6 day's a week.
No bonuses anymore since one company is paying 5 other company's.. that means, Crysis is paying 5 or 6? company's...
You get also only old-school hardware to work on high-end games.. and don't ask for something new!

Former Employee - Junior Programmer in Frankfurt am Main (Germany)

    I worked at Crytek

    Pros

Coworkers are incredibly talented, and since everyone is coming from different horzons, it's easy to make good friends.
Working with those great personalities has been a very good experience.
On the technical level, I had the opportunity to learn a lot of new things.

    Cons

Although the majority of coworkers were great personalities, some of the senior programmers were very protective about their knowledge, not wanting to share it with (junior) people they don't approve of.

Management only gave any feedback about my own job performance once year, and then, without much possibility to learn how to improve it. And these reviews were tightly tied to career advancement, which made it virtually impossible to arrive at higher level.

Remuneration was beyond bad for this kind of job. Below german average salary level for technical jobs for university graduates, and below international levels as well. Only senior staff got a good remuneration.

Finally, people were given little recognition from management for doing a good job, which resulted in a general discontent about the company, and thus a high employee turn over.

When talking to management, and showing a different opinion had repercussions on the job. People who disagreed (for good reason) and told this to management were simply "let go" and "yes men" made career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to what your employees say, even if they disagree with your vision. They are likely to bring up good points that will improve productivity and working climate.
Don't forget tt's your employees that produce the company value.
