I worked at Cummins

Pros

Relatively high base pay, sponsor H-1B for international students. Opportunity to move cross functionally internally.

Cons

Small town, cyclical industry. Layoff every few years. Low level managers don't know how to manage people. Poor marketing forecast driving crazy hiring plans and then layoff. Not so good insurance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Forecast more conservatively and treat employee as human beings instead of head counts

I worked at Cummins full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Cummins' mission and values are second to none. This is a company that places a premium on employees both in words and action. As a multinational company, there are also plenty of opportunities to do interesting things. While their implementation of six sigma is a bit off mark, the framework allows you to take on projects your job description might not otherwise allow you to do.

    Cons

Their mid-level management can vary in terms of talent. Given that this is an organization that tends to make decisions by consensus building, Cummins does spend quite a bit of time on projects that ultimately go nowhere because of lack of support in a certain area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to focus itself to ensure the projects being done are worthwhile and offer its support to ensure that they come to fruition. Too often upper management will let conflict languish in hopes of it's ranks coming to some sort of resolution. In addition to this philosophy causing a giant waste of time, it often does not work. Know when a decision needs to be made, make it, support it, and don't look back.
