I have been working at Cummins full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Industry leader, Global opportunities, Easy to move to different functions (SCM to Finance to HR, etc), Visa sponsorship and Cummins has a great senior leadership team.

Cons

Slow growth, Performance management system is very poor (with forced ranking), Lower to Mid level management is bad.

Overall, Cummins did not seem like a company that encouraged innovation and rewarded exceptional performance. It seemed like at least at lower and mid management levels experience and # of years at company were all that mattered.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cummins needs to do away with the forced ranking process and provide faster growth opportunities for high performing individuals. It seems like Cummins is the best place to work if you are an average performer but probably a huge disappointment if you are really a high performer.

    I worked at Cummins full-time

    Pros

    Many engineering assignments carry a high level of technical responsibility with room for learning and growth. It is an international company that prides itself on "diversity."

    Cons

    Not necessarily stable employment. They hire like mad for a few months and turn around and lay off without missing a beat. As a corporation they pride themselves on it, and seem to think it's a good thing to regularly slash the ranks. The top HR and bean counters don't seem to realize the negative effect it has on morale, nor on ability to carry out their mission of developing and making products. Inexperienced people are left holding the bag where gaps of experienced staff are gone. The management thinks nothing of regularly booting out employees with many years of positive contributions, with no notice, no going away luncheon and no dignity. So it's very much an employee beware situation. Extremely few people get to retire willingly at age 65. Often, the experience level of staff leaves something to be desired, but they can sometimes count on suppliers to pick up the slack. There is more planning for continuity in staff with union level staff than exempt level, where there is virtually no coherent plan. Decisions are made so high up, they don't see the detrimental effects of capability at a working level.

    Pros

    Truly great people with good values can be found in many parts of the world
    Opportunity for more work is there
    Opportunity to live abroad and experience new culture is there

    Cons

    Compensation structure is laughable for engineers. The band structure and equity adjustments pretty much gaurantee that lifelong high performers dont make much more money than lifelong "2" performers
    Diversity taken too far - preferential treatment to hiring, promotion, layoffs, and pay given to women first, minorities second, and everyone else third. The CEO said publicly, "we will have 50% women on the leadership team by xxx date" - how is he sure that a woman is qualified for 50% of the jobs? Answer: He isn't - but it will be forced.
    People are "lifers" - and lifers can create complacency and be a blocker for promotion of good, young talent.
    Locations suck. They really suck for young people.
    More work/responsibilitiy not aligned to pay. You are paid for 2 roles in your rear-view mirror.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't forget the white male engineers - they are the lifeblood of the company.
    Move the COB & COM to Indianapolis - instant access to better talent for admin skill families
    Tear up "home to host" and start over.
