Current Contractor - Systems Administrator in New York, NY
Current Contractor - Systems Administrator in New York, NY

I have been working at Cuny Research Foundation as a contractor (more than a year)

Pros

Decent pay, flexible work hours, great learning opportunity. You are paid to learn and do research with top notch professors.

Cons

No benefits, contracts can expire and if funding does not come through, jobs will expire as well.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Well as for the PI's, they are achievement driven and if you can't handle the workload you won't make it. That's just the way it is. No advice to them, because they are the ones running the show and getting the funding.

A good place for a steady paycheck, but you'll need to deal with the rude people of New York using bad computers.

I worked at Cuny Research Foundation part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The work environment is great. You use a random desk every time but they are large and you get plenty of space (5 feet away from the next person). Also, all supervisors are kind and helpful.

    Cons

Employee policies are very strict; daily issues with work computer; overly harsh employee grading system that rejects common sense

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is aware of employee frustrations from the bi-weekly team meetings, but there's no need to provide needed technological and workplace improvements to please workers that can easily be replaced. Supervisors share our frustration, but it's some of their superiors who are disconnected.

Former Employee - Administrator in New York, NY

I worked at Cuny Research Foundation part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I worked for the Creative Arts Team, which is a "public school collaborative program" within the Office of Academic Affairs. There were many benefits in terms of professional development, networking within the university and beyond and opportunities for career growth. Salaries and benefits are very good.

    Cons

As a not-for-profit some jobs are dependent on funding, which may not be stable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to encourage collaborations between offices and across campuses.
