Good place to work, but stuck in the past and going nowhere

I have been working at Cypress Semiconductor full-time

    Pros

    Very smart, hard working colleagues
Constant management to the bottom line; this company will likely survive long term as a result
Good core products that support the rest of the company
Clearly defined (and implemented) corporate goals and processes
Good communication of corporate status and short term goals from CEO on down

    Cons

Constant management to the bottom line has resulted in a shrinking experienced US engineering workforce, and an expanding offshore junior workforce. You must routinely sacrifice your evenings and weekends in order to make a difference here.
Senior management that knows how to produce commodity hardware, but no clue about software production - which is a real product differentiator
CEO that manages based on 1990s standards and practices; result is a waterfall development process with a death march for nearly every major project milestone
Lack of innovation provides no real opportunity for this company to grow long term
Too much "paperwork" and process overhead that seems to adds little product value

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company/management is far more internally "political" than they will admit to.
Stop focusing on Ops/expenses (achieving quarterly profits) as the long-term survival strategy. Explore more new product opportunities in order to grow.
Stop producing software like hardware, they're very different.

I worked at Cypress Semiconductor full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Dedicated people. Strong team oriented culture at lower levels in the company. Very good training programs.

    Cons

There is too much micromanagement. Once upper management makes a decision it's final. It's very difficult to get a poor decision reviewed, analyzed and changed. Lengthy product development cycles have limited company growth. Bonuses are not always paid timely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make use of your people’s knowledge and experience when developing business plans.
