I have been working at Cystic Fibrosis Foundation full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

The venture philanthropy model has been critical to the success of the organization. Commitment of organization to find a cure is almost singular and very effective. High integrity, 90% of dollars go to research. CEO is high touch and engaged, while focused and results-driven.

Cons

Very top-down, "cliquish" due to very long tenure of most top decision makers. Somewhat parochial. Not very open to diverse or contrary points of view, too rigid. One can make significant contributions and not necessarily be welcomed into the "circle". Some top management appear to feel immune to common courtesies to those they don't know and unfortunately translates to some as arrogance or lack of interest beyond particular area within organization.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a culture of comfort for newcomers who have a lot to contribute. Mentor and train across departments, invest in employees and offer avenues for development. While a challenge for most organizations, the CF Foundation has many things going for it and investment in this area would definitely take it up a notch.

    Cons

-Extremely intense and taxing pace of work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more career pathways for entry level employees, many of whom must leave for career advancement.
