Better love your work because there's a lot and they don't pay much

I worked at DNV Kema Energy & Sustainability

    Pros

Some fabulous people work there -- high potential for mentorship and responsibility
    Work flexibility is high
Opportunities to pursue what is interesting, as long as it relates to utility consulting
    Some folks are very passionate
    Decent benefits

    Cons

Not enough people are good or passionate
KEMA is the B-leagues of consulting (in the U.S.)
Compensation well below market in the bay area
Only metric that matters is billability
Some horrible people are managing projects and they are sometimes hard to avoid
Morale has been declining for the past year (2011)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to start bidding jobs more smartly. Management needs to clearly define what jobs they will bid and what margin is needed in the bid. Dropping the hammer on billability and cost overruns destroys the morale, so bidding jobs better is the missing third leg of the stool.

The leadership void enabled me to develop my resume and professional skills but prevented any real advancement.

I worked at DNV Kema Energy & Sustainability

    Pros

Great opportunities for employees at all levels to build resume, skills
    Flexible work hours
    Smart, motivated employees (generally)
Working at the forefront of a rapidly changing industry

    Cons

Capable, hard workers are rewarded with more work, not promotions & raises.
Incompetent mid-level management! The only good manager I worked for at KEMA left the company (fed up with his superiors). Managers are extremely hands off and provide little guidance, yet they make decisions and set budgets based on unrealistic client desires, usually with little or no input from the Analysts who actually understand the projects. They also frequently take credit for successes but avoid blame for failures.
Geographical dispersion impedes development of culture & community.
    Favoratism in promotions process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you expect Analysts to act as Senior Consultants and Project Managers, promote them and pay them for it.
Hire capable Project Managers, regardless of their industry experience.
Hire business developers that understand consulting and budgeting, not just their industries, and incentive contracts based on profit, not revenue.
Train your managers to manage, and your leaders to lead!
