    Pros

Higher-level managers will take time from their day to come talk to you
    Teams work well together
    Good pay and benefits
Very flexible with your time and needs

    Cons

Every time a few drops of rain falls, 50,000 people are out of power. They fix it very quickly, but everyone who is not an engineer or repair crew is eligible for Storm Duty, which is essentially putting on a hard hat and standing by a downed power line to make sure no people go near it until a repair person shows up. Even if you are making $100k a year, you still have to go out like a crossing guard.

    Advice to Management

Everything is great there except this concept of storm duty. When downed power lines happen so often, you really should hire specific people for this. We didn't go to school for 4 - 6 years, get a Master's to stand in the rain like a crossing guard.

  2. Helpful (1)

DTE Energy provided flexible, partially educational, somewhat unprofessional internship.

    Pros

I think one of the biggest pros to working at DTE Energy was location. It's always nice to be downtown, especially because it's not too far from anywhere. DTE spends a lot of money on their campus and offices creating a very nice work environment. The pro to being a student intern in the special projects group was schedule flexibility. I didn't have to take a semester off to work. The pay was decent too.

    Cons

DTE Energy has a very old vertical style management system, which can be very frustrating at times. A majority of employees also spend their entire lives being only employed by the company, which creates a toxic environment of people talking about one another in an unprofessional manner behind their backs, but being kind and artificially polite in person. The temporary student group is not a good group to be involved with. If you're a student, and you want a good, professional experience, trust me: do the co-op, take the semester off, you won't regret it. The structure of 100+ students reporting to the same person doesn't work. Avoid the drama of the temporary student group, it's not worth your time; the experience is there, but it's limited.

    Advice to Management

I think DTE should consolidate the student programs and have them all under one umbrella. It would make it easier for recruiting and would give students a better opportunity. Having students only working around other students in a temporary position is less effective in training future employees and less effective in efficiently getting work done. Possibly consider eliminating the temporary student group all together, and replace it with the much better organized Co-op program.
