Daily Republic – “It's a newspaper ...”
Pros
You can cross departments and write anything you're good at, so there's freedom in that respect. Newspaper is squarely focused on community and covers Solano County fairly well.
Cons
There is no strong figurehead editor at the top, but rather a yes man in the Ed-in-Chief role for the owners. Pay is terrible, even for section editors (even for newspapers) and vacation is non-existent. They do the best they can to make you feel like a servant.
Advice to Senior Management
I know running a newspaper is hard, especially in these trying times, but for God's sake, at least throw employees a bone. If you can't pay employees well, then do your damndest to give them as many fringe bennies as possible to keep them happy.
