Good people with average "top-down" management style

    Pros

Worked as an IT contractor for DTNA over the past two years at the Montgomery Park office. Environment is a cube farm with a great atrium outside of the offices. Many good, hard-working people. Decent work/life balance. Awesome ergonomic chairs provided. Company shuts down the week of Christmas. Good solid salary (via my agency). Dress is office casual (jeans, button-down shirts ok).

    Cons

Employees often have to struggle against a top-down management structure from Germany. Management has to patch together local solutions for mandates sent from overseas HQ. Little motivation to push the boundaries - as top level roadblocks abound. Technology is lagging in places - or is awkwardly implemented. Company requires that you quit your contracting position in order to apply for FTE work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Local managers should be allowed more input into the initiatives that effect stateside operations. More work-from-home opportunities would make sense.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay, excellent benefits. 5 day work week, holiday shutdowns, fast paced work ...makes time go by faster. Employees are backed by the UAW....which is a voluntary union.

    Cons

NO JOB SECURITY....Constant layoffs. No possibility for advancement, Too much focus on profitability, and making production. Poor structure...too many micro managers that wander aimlessly, and seem to do nothing at all. Lack of communication, and truthfulness about job security, orders, and overall performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to be on the same page as employees. Stop trying to look good for your superiors, and worry more about the group working under you. You can't manage from a chair in the office, or lounge.
