I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America

Pros

Alot of smart people who can be learned from. Excellent for work life balance. In good economic times, fairly easy to move around from one dept. to another every few years and get broad experience. In good economic times, opportunity to work on truly global assignments. Communication from Senior Mgmt. about company is excellent.

Cons

Pay is terrible. Growth opportunities non existent due to financial condition of company and influx of Germans in high positions. Most decision making is centralized out of parent company in Germany making it sometimes hard to make a difference. Economic cycles have a severe impact on the financial health of the company. Did I mention pay is terrible? Bonuses have become large part of compensation (~25%) and have been cut for one year and on track to be cut a second year (in 2010).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are doing good and are very open. Unfortunately, the company is far too susceptible to the global economic cycle. Salary levels are a joke. You will lose lots of people when economy picks up. Martin Daum is too new (3 months on job) to rate.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America

    Pros

Talented, loyal, dedicated employees at middle management level and below. Deep German pockets as the 23rd largest company in the world. (in terms of revenue according to Forbes).

    Cons

Highly political, nepotistic, frustrating corporate culture. Very unprofessional corporate culture in the executive ranks and field positions. Uneducated, abrasive managers, especially in southern, CA and field positions. Strong preference towards Germans and German style management. Archaic, outdated management philosophies and incompetent managers. Exploitation of dedicated employees. Recently cut everyone's pay by 10 percent and revoked 401k matches and bonuses, which accounted for 20% plus of total income. Treat employees very poorly. Very "old school", "good 'ol boys" way of doing business. Poor product quality compared to competition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some new, young, educated, talented people in to provide a new perspective on doing business. Promote your younger employees. Appreciate your employees, and show it, recognize they are your most important asset. Provide more incentive for strong performance and hold people accountable, including executives.

    Pros

Excellent people among colleagues, terrific product line up and very good benefits. I cannot say enough about the fine dedicated people that work at Daimler.

    Cons

Company has excess manufacturing capacity spent millions on a new plant in the depths of a recession. Stayed way too long with Sterling and Western Star to the detriment of the Freightliner brand. Moved sales and marketing to South Carolina leaving the remainder of the company in Portland. Changing the name of the company from Freightliner LLC to Daimler has lost focus with North American truck market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the company back in one place. Attack the market with the superior product line up in place. Get marketing focused on the job at hand. Empower the folks to get back the swagger the company once had.
