I have been working at Darden

Pros

working for Darden is a good experience to add to a resume as it is a respected company within the hospitality industry

Cons

unfortunantly it would seem the hours are very irregular, no fairness in amount of hours shared between staff, could be there for 2 hours and sent home or 12 hours without a break.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

i think if you stopped giving shifts to those who already have another job (and have stressed over and over again that they can not work certain days and hours) and you gave shifts to the members of staff who actually want to work 40hrs a week, rather than just 16hr a week, you may retain the more committed staff, instead of them having to leave to support themselves. unfairness in hours scheduled should really be a concern for retaining your staff.

Former Employee - Server in Schaumburg, IL

    I worked at Darden

    Pros

I liked working for Darden because they offered great health benefits for servers. The Schaumburg Olive Garden was great because there was no sidework. Busboys did all the work and were tipped out accordingly. Was a good environment.

    Cons

Schedules weren't always calculated fairly but it was pretty standard for a restaurant job. One person had a non-management position but was treated like a manager - almost like halfway between trainers/assistant managers and managers. Kind of weird working relationship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know the corporate restaurant world is a revolving door anyway but it would be less so if managers knew who their employees were and could distinguish who could be promoted up and who should *not* be promoted up. It's unfortunate when incompetent people become trainers and blue card holders because they have seniority - in a fast-paced restaurant environment, competency is more important than service time. People should be judged on merit.
