Former Employee - Server in Denton, TX

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, time off when you need it, ability to move from state to state and keep your job... Also, you get to tase most of the foods, desserts, and wines. That's a nice little signing bonus.

    Cons

The expendability of its wait staff. Very high stress, competitive environment in some many Olive Gardens. Competitive in a bad way. Can't make the cut? Go home. No grooming here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to grow your employees into success in their positions. That's what management is for. A manager shouldn't actually have to "manage" their employees. A manager should set their employees up for success. Olive Garden seems to have a 3 strikes your out kind of mentality, instead.

Former Employee - Waiter in Billings, MT

    Pros

Excellent team to work with - fun, hard working, cooperative; nice meal benefits, great benefits for a restaurant company, respectable pay for the work in most areas. Really appreciated the flexibility of some of the managers in regards to scheduling, the plus of a larger company and team.

    Cons

Rigid, top-down management style. The need for consistency limited creativity and flexibility at the front-line, where employees needed to tailor the experience most. Don't expect a lot of autonomy and trust to be given to you at first without following every detailed rule. Harder to genuinely recommend food that is middle-class at best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be consistently unique and great, not just greatly consistent. Guests can't always communicate what they want, nor do they know. It's the staff's job to figure this out. Stop the insipid and wasteful guest and employee surveys and go for greater freedom and trust instead. Hard to expect Hospitaliano(!) when hospitality means tailoring to a guest's needs on a personal level.
