I have been working at Dartmouth full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The community is very tight knit so there is always something to do. Being in a small town means there are no distractions, which is great if you're doing research. There are always opportunities to collaborate with other researchers and Dartmouth tends to attract a lot of great ones despite its reputation as an undergraduate institution.

    Cons

The winters can be harsh, but if you like winter sports, this is the place to be. Skiing, snowboarding, hockey, ice skating, you name it. The Upper Valley isn't terribly diverse. Likewise, if you're a foodie, then there isn't that much to try compared to the city.

    Small community but coordination challenges

I have been working at Dartmouth full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Benefits including health insurance & vacation time are definitely plus points. Administrative staff are generally polite and try to be helpful. Faculty are committed to their students & sense of school spirit among students is high.

    Cons

Maintaining a "harmonious" relationship with colleagues is often given preference over honest feedback and discussion about actual professional competence of employees -- the lack of which can often impede progress within campus and with the institution's external relations; Coordination across departments on projects is more challenging than expected for a relatively small academic institution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Departments & individual (professional) schools need to improve cross-disciplinary and cross-campus engagement on issues, projects, etc. Need for greater international visibility & engagement with the world to remain competitive with other peer U.S. institutions of similar academic standing.

    Positive Outlook
