Pros

Cassandra is a top level Open Source Project, which brings it a level of credibility.
The community seems to have accepted Cassandra as a viable solution especially given its sharding & data-protection architecture.
Committers to the codebase are non employees thereby feeding off the larger eco systems ... 'free' code.

Cons

Immature management. Political
Rolling door of employees.
Office/ work environment in Austin & Sunnyvale are a joke & non conducive for effective work or thinking.
Choatic with little planning.
A number of senior employees left over the past 12 months.

Lied to, when I was made an offer about salary scales.
Found out subsequently that this is typical practice to lowball offers.

Advice to Management

Lead by example.
Build trust (doubt if term means anything)
Hire the right leaders
Dont try to mimic MongoDB - in everything you do rather build your own brand

This is a really odd review, because I'm based in Austin and I can't think of any senior engineers here who are (a) disgruntled or (b) confused about how open source works.

    Pros

DataStax is a great place to work. From the engineering side of things they have:
    - Smart Engineers
    - Great technology in the growing big data space
    - Work from home or remotely
    - Open source friendly

    Cons

There are 3 main offices, with engineering being spread across them and throughout the world. So you have to get used to doing communication through chat, and that all meetings are teleconferences of some kind. If you mind that, then this isn't the company for you.

    Pros

The management team are building a truly world-class company that rewards and incentivises success. The team bring a strong understanding of what needs to be done and the ability to clearly articulate the direction on how to make this happen.

Underpinning this is an inherent integrity that sets DataStax apart from the crowd and makes it a great place to work.

    Cons

It's growing at an incredible pace so you need to be comfortable with change.
You need to be comfortable with a laser like focus on delivering.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work.
