Pros

Excellent benefits and very secure job position. Attractive vacation and sabatical packages.

Cons

Very little room for career advancement, new challenges, or significant pay increases.

Advice to Management

There really is no cohesiveness to the law firm. There are the partners, then the secretaries, and separate from all of that is the General & Administrative group, the people who keep the place running. "Service Together" has no meaning to us and seems rather trite when it doesn't seem there is much "togetherness" in the firm in the first place. Now give us merit raises when a job is well done and maybe then there will be some "service together." Unfortunately, the firm is placing a lesser importance on raises of any sort for the time being. As such, I find myself placing a lesser value on "service together."

    Pros

    Best thing about the law firm is the exposure to interesting issues that aren't necessarily available to junior associates at the bigger white shoe firms.

    Cons

    The worse thing about the law firm is that it is still a firm. The hours are difficult and the scheduling near impossible sometimes.

    Advice to Management

    A better line of communication with staff and associates. We often recommend this, though it so rarely happens. It seems like this shouldn't be such a hard bridge to gap

    Pros

    Almost everyone who works here is not only very smart but also lacking the intellectual blinders so common among people in the legal field, many of whom seem to have few or no interests outside of work; many NY DWTers are also very nice; the hours are slightly less grueling than in many NY law firms; a Seattle main office and a strong liberal democratic / free speech / civil rights ethos among NY partners impart a slightly more humane atmosphere than that in many NY law firms

    Cons

    Too corporate; too bureaucratic; rigid hierarchy; unclear lines of command and frequently conflicting expectations; frequent instances of confusion / stress / time waste caused by managers with princess complexes &/or afraid to make a decision &/or who place staff or junior attorneys in untenable positions to avoid addressing issues between managers; "slightly more humane atmosphere" mentioned above is in reality pretty illusory and easily and often dispensed with when it becomes inconvenient; liberal ethos is more theory than practice; career opportunities much better for attorneys than for non-attorneys; obsessive political correctness sometimes results in lower expectations for black employees than for white employees -- not good for either and not fair to either;

    Advice to Management

    Increased understanding and recognition of staff contributions would boost morale which would benefit the firm as a whole; high neediness levels among attorneys are unnecessary and counterproductive
