Pros

DeNA is trying to replicate the success of their business in Japan in the rest of the world. The challenge is immense and the paths to get there provide enough variety to keep anyone entertained. Overall team spirit is encouraging and you get a sense of being in something in the rise and unknown potential.

Cons

There are large disparities between the management structures between Japan and the Western studios, particularly DeNA San Francisco. The duality of leadership sometimes creates problems, and poor leadership skills in positions of large influence are at times, quite evident.

Advice to Management

Justify your positions by adding value instead of being a nuisance to the production teams. Also, in-depth knowledge of the business and products you lead is the minimum you could do to have intelligent conversations about them.

    Pros

    1. If you want to work for a Japanese tech company, this is one of the better ones - pays above market rate for Japan, nice office with good location, decent benefits, flexible working environment in many teams

    2. Still good for your CV - hires many smart people and exit opportunities include Amazon, Google etc.

    3. Opportunities for travel and relocation do exist depending on your department

    Cons

    1. No consistent vision or strategy. A company started by consultants, run by consultants, which is incapable of trying anything truly innovative and is more focused on making money than solving real problems. The reality is that the company is in slow decline - an aging gaming business is the cash cow, which props up the other unprofitable businesses and the overseas branches (almost without exception, unprofitable)

    2. No real career track for foreigners. None at manager level or above in Tokyo, the only one I know who was senior (working in CEO office) was sidelined after he disagreed with the prevailing strategy - ironically, he was hired to advise on strategy. Management wants to benefit from having foreigners around without having to make any real compromises

    3. Says it wants to be Global No. 1 but not an international culture and poor level of english literacy. See Rakuten for similar issues

    4. Lots of smart, analytical people with no creativity. Not willing to try fresh ideas because they are difficult. But there is no such thing as easy money...if it's easy to make it's easy to copy

    5. You can make more money for less hours at a foreign company

    Advice to Management

Get a real games guy into CEO position in US - current guy (ex-CFO) is a number cruncher.

Set a clear vision for the company - what are we going to become No. 1 at?
