I have been working at Dell full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Good opportunities to move up in the company if you work hard and show that you want to learn, and obtain IT certifications. Dell training is very good. Pay is also above average for tech support, esp. for those new in the field. CEO is very down to earth, very cool in this day and age. Benefits are very good, matching 401K up to 5%, free cert testing, free on-line IT study books, etc.

Cons

Not clear how going private will affect company, but change is likely. Sometimes good, other times unclear.

Advice to Management

Be careful going private and losing some control of the company to corporate raiders.

  1. Michael and his very smart leadership team, countered by a mixed bag of middle tier VPs and their respective 'entourage'

I have been working at Dell full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Dell is expanding beyond their traditional businesses, aiming for new market segments that they know and understand very well. Michael is very clued in, and knows where to aim his company.

    Cons

Aligning old silo'ed teams, with their short-sited rear-guard perspective and quarterly focused outlook around reviews and bonuses, is going to require some tough love. Dell's implementation of stack-ranking does not build a strong company, but instead enforces a bell-curve of mediocraty.

    Advice to Management

Stack-ranking needs to be fixed. Isn't it odd that company feedback also follows a bell-curve? The curve should be weighted positively at the top, tailing out towards the negative... compare your 'tell-Dell' feedback results with Google, Facebook, and others that do NOT implement stack-ranking the way Dell does.

I have been working at Dell full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay, benefits, and flexibility of work life balance

    Cons

Politics, solidarity between organizations, and fear of layoffs

    Advice to Management

Improve the connection between tactical efforts and strategic decisions. It takes far too long to get certain things finished when you lack connecting the the workforce responsibilities together against the overall effort.
