Former Employee - Good Place to Work When Times Are Good
Former Employee - Good Place to Work When Times Are Good

I worked at Dell

Pros

friendly, relaxed environment with lots of personal development opportunities. Also, the social side of things are good. Gym, leisure centre, social club. All good.

Cons

little time from management. No praise or encouragement. If times are bad the hard working guys are first to lose out.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

be more supportive. You are in those positions because of your supposed experience so offer support and advice rather than the usual work harder or leave if you dont want to be here speech.

    I worked at Dell

    Pros

Dell has many great people at various levels within the company. Almost everyone wants to make great products and satisfy customers.

    Cons

There are too many politicians running the company. They have great political skills but lack leadership. As a result the company has continued to "re-org" itself into a corner.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to and promote the people in the trenches and get rid of the career politicians.

    I worked at Dell

    Pros

The focus on work-life balance ensures that employees stay motivated, great benefits (scholarships for a degree/MBA, external training for individual development), teambuilding/out-of-town activities are high class, senior management are very competent and have extensive experience working in their field, tremendous focus on individual development using top-of-the-line org management / human resource management systems, process-driven approach on improving effectiveness and efficiency in the organization (even leading up to black belt six sigma certifications), a very global environment provides opportunities to work with employees from another continent to share best practices.

    Cons

Unstable market - bonuses and benefits - and ultimately, your job - are dependent on the company's performance and profits. This causes almost yearly redundancy exercises. Although Dell is kind enough to allow another company to acquire their sites/assets to avoid having to fire all employees, this does not quell the fear of losing your job when the computer market declines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of sneaking up on your employees and surprising them that they've already been acquired by another company, we would rather appreciate your transparency. Selling employees "under the table" is contrary to Dell's number 1 value: INTEGRITY. And please stop spending too much on your expats who rake up to $10,000 rent on their upscale apartments.
