A company with good ethics and work life balance, just a bit short on strategy

I worked at Dell full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Strong ethics, Reasonably good work life balance, combination of strategy and tacticals, intelligent people around, good thought leaders

Cons

A bit of empire building at the top levels of pyramid, this is ok until strategy takes a hit. Multiple functions that dont really seem to contribute to bottom line. Lower emphasis on aspects such as recreation, team building, etc. Somehow the talent pool never ends up creating the next big thing although they try.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure every employee is truly contributing to the bottom line and reduce functions without tangible benefit

    Pros

You will get more training than you have time to take! This is a good thing especially if you come from a budget stricken land. Courses are easily available on any subject matter. The work life balance is amazing, especially for a virtual employee.

    Cons

Rating system seems fairly rigged. Managers have no control over bonus structure until the end of the year and you can easily get passed over if you slip in the rating system because they don't have enough slots available for a 'great'. Career advancement is too linear it feels unless you jump into sales then you are on a list.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your employees a fair outlook and don't hide behind numbers. Tell us if bonuses or advancement is unrealistic this year, or if you can't do a thing about it. We enjoy being in the know to make informed decisions about our career.
