Current Employee - Senior Program Manager
Current Employee - Senior Program Manager

I have been working at Dell full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

The company has a lot of resources to get things done. You will gain many skills and work on interesting projects

Cons

Too many levels of managers to get buy-in, pre-approval and politics. Business functions managers only have their areas' goals in mind, rather than, working on delivering overall business values. Many people are only interested in carving out their piece of the pie. Not enough international assignment opportunities/rotational programs.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take Bain's advice (work that was done 5 years ago) to consolidate the hierarchy levels. They attempted and simplified the levels, then in the last 2 years added to the hierarchy levels again. Going backwards is disappointing. Need a flatter organization where managers have the best interests of the company in mind and not personal empires.

    Pros

People are very knowledgeable and professional. Work life balance is reasonable.

    Cons

Dell is not growing so promotions are limited. There are many senior engineers competing for these promotions.

    I worked at Dell full-time

    Pros

The amount of knowledgeable Type A people that come to Dell is truly amazing. There are so many people that also go the extra mile day or night to make it right (regardless of the processes, policies, and misdirection that comes in the chaos of this business), that it made the experience truly worth the stay. Also, the pay and benefits is pretty good compared to some other companies in the area.

    Cons

Compared to the talent at the Individual contributor level, it seems like that talent or execution of that talent at the higher levels appears disjointed or naturally in opposition to the greater good. Also, you tend to be in competition with resources, etc... and with really antiquated tools, to get the job done. Back in the day it seemed like the whole company had a unified passion when it was "beat Compaq" but in recent years it was more about VP fiefdoms and sparse demilitarized zones in between.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Now that the company has gone private, I hope the bureaucracy can be mitigated, and the passion and unified spirit that was there in the early can return, and that the management that is left can take the valid input from the ICs that remain and balance that against the Consultancy input.
