I have been working at Dell

Pros

The best reason to work for Dell is the amount of freedoms provided to the employees. The work conditions are more relaxed then others. It used to have a positive culture (not the case anymore). It is a fast moving company with little focus on the micro management and more on helping the employees feel empowered. Everything within the company is transparent, you can see the position of anyone you talk to in an instant. The culture is also relaxed, the managers look like the employees and you cannot tell the difference. An equal workplace that does not focus on status.

Cons

company changes quickly, profit drives the business, easily outsourced and pro-outsourcing.

I have been working at Dell

    Pros

The people are in general very nice and want to do a good job.

    Cons

The senior management have lost the plot and do not seem to understand the consequences of all this moving functions to low cost locations and globalisation. Doing a good job is highly dependent on teamwork and its very hard to form a team with a mailbox. Process is great but you also need people who can think their way through a problem and unfortunately most of the people behing these can't or won't do that. If you want to ensure the best for your customer you have to check everyone's work and sometimes try and do it yourself to get the result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get back to the floor and see how your front-line staff struggle with the process solutions you have implemented. They encourage a lack of ownership and customer focus.

    I worked at Dell

    Pros

    Exposure to latest hardware technology

    Cons

For a software professional there is not much long term opportunity. Bread and butter is hardware product and most of it is commodity off the shelf.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much focus on quality issues and undercutting price compared to competition. Employees don't have time to work on innovative ideas.
