I worked at Dell

Pros

Great Products, Good Benefits and Generally good people. Attitude to flexible working is great and the company is well lead at a Senior (IE US ) level .

Cons

Dont expect middle managers to support You , they are all driving spreadsheets and Focusing on the "Number " , not though at all is given to Sales Strategy, developing the business and how to achieve Business Objectives. Just Go Do it is the Mantra . Expect to be reorganised every six months with the associated Politics and Upheaval . Good people leave through sheer exhaustion whilst the dead wood remains

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a step back and understand what the business needs to grow and achieve its aims . Above all listen to the people who work for you , they know everything that needs to be fixed and how to do it efficiently. Stop wasting millions of dollars on pointless initiatives, whilst penny pinching at a trivial level EG Making people pay for the Coffee Machine (At that point I knew it was time to go ) . This is a great company , so start behaving professionally and make it better

    I worked at Dell

    Pros

Dell has been in constant change for the past 5-7 years, not always experiencing a soft landing after each time they try. However, those periods of turmoil offer the most opportunities for growth, and for the most part, those are available for those who seek them. In the process, and if you try to intentionally navigate those waters with open eyes, you will become wiser and more resilient, and will probably learn more about organizational politics than you would in a more stable corporation.

    Cons

Seeing so many things change all the time, it is inevitable you will witness your share of unfairness. Up until the time I was there, Dell was well known by bring in people paying well below the market, all the while demand more than the market would. Some manager tried to fix those injustices by themselves but for the most part it was very hard for them to do anything significant when so many employees were dissatisfied with their low pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Act like a top player if you aspire to one day becoming one again.

    Pros

Some of the best and brightest people you will come across.

    Cons

VP's are slow to make decisions and not aggressive enough in changing the business model.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the opex now to put the company in a better position to succeed. Spin off the Consumer business to allow it and the other segments to succeed.
