I have been working at Deloitte full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

- Clear expectations framework - Challenging work - Competetive compensation - Great people

Cons

- A large company requires a lot of checks and balances which can cause a lot of beurocratic work, just something that is a fact for every large consulting firm

Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. Five years later this is still the best place for me.

    Pros

    - Hires young, bright resources - A few really great managers/senior managers - Amazing culture in the past - this still resonates with some managers/teams, but not all - Analyst program is incredible - leaders, coaches and participants all enjoy and come away will great skills and networks

    Cons

    - Confusing and compressing compensation structure for FY13 and beyond, places all the risk on staff and away from partnership - Opacity into firm earnings (and what they mean, e.g. "making plan") - Inability to rotate between projects and get diversified experience - Many "checked out" senior managers/PPDs, no mentorship at the highest level - Lots of overhead staff watering down the culture and profits - Many 'experienced hires' with no relevant work experience brought in at too high of a level in the PPD track - Top heavy with nebulous edicts from HR organization that no one can request information from or make changes to, absolutely no personal care or attention paid - Forever changing "road to partner", 10-12 years to 15+ years in my tenure - Role of 'counselor' has no control on it, many counselors are unknowledgable and unenthused

    Advice to Management

Cut the fat and remove some of the overhead; get more people into client service and away from "support staff". Clarify the expectations for the road to partner and make this an attainable goal for resources to inspire them. Care more about resources and invest in careers through education and compensation across service line. Ensure a higher quality of senior management and investment in junior resources. Invest in your people, instead of seeing them solely as dollars. Try and get back to "old Deloitte" and revive the awesome culture that is seriously in danger right now.

I have been working at Deloitte full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Focus on building variety of soft skills such as presentation/public speaking, client relations, time management, resource management, and writing documentation. The proposal process is very impressive and clearly shows how Deloitte wins as much work as it does. Overall friendly environment with approachable partners and managers. Variety of opportunities available outside of client work. Great stepping stone to either business school or a fantastic industry job.

    Cons

Overall Deloitte employees are there to do a job. They do it very well because of the sheer number of hours and people that are put to each problem. However, there is little passion in the job or work itself. The growing technology company culture with enthusiastic individuals excited about their work and their effect on the world has not reached Deloitte. The culture doesn't look to be changing anytime soon either considering how traditional the majority of partners think. Maybe the new school of partners will enable even the most basic of advanced development (agile perhaps?) and understand that happy, passionate workers create quality products in the same or less time. The technology consulting division is diverse and every experience in every industry is different however switching between industries is rare and difficult for all levels. Technology consulting projects are naturally longer, especially in Deloitte where often the projects are end to end (requirements through implementation and maintenance). Not a place to go to if you want varied experiences. Also the technologies used in the majority of projects are old and outdated. Dont expect to work with very innovative products. The "emerging solutions" and "deloitte digital" groups are the two that work in newer technologies. However they are not only the smallest divisions, they also have the few projects per employee and lowest pay rate. In comparison to SAP, Oracle, and Systems Integration, these innovative groups barely touch 1/10 in size. In the end this is not a place for those that enjoy technology or creative solutions. It is an effective machine built to reuse proven techniques and teach newcomers how to implement these techniques. The culture, while enjoyable at times, is also very work/party focused and heavily male dominated. Much of the networking completed will be done at the bar. Great for the drinkers, not so great for those who decline to take a shot. Finally, the lack of bonuses or overtime for the first three years is no longer competitive in the market.

    Advice to Management

Deloitte Technology Consulting has managed to develop a fantastic reputation over the past decade. This has resulted in hiring from an elite group of universities at all levels. Many of those students come with specialized degrees. These students should be matched to industries or projects that utilize these skills. After hiring there is zero effort taken to match new hires to their interests. Often this results in a serious lack of passion the employee has for their job. while the excuse given is often along the lines of "you are here to try new things..." it can easily be refuted by the fact that every project offers its team members a variety of skill building opportunities beyond their main role. With such a high caliber of employees entering, and the turnover rate rising of "principle school" candidates. something has to be done to retain top talent.
