Delphi – “Delphi in Need of a New Oracle”
Pros
If it ever exits bankruptcy, Delphi should see growth. It has an established infrastructure and manufacturing base that should provide an advantage relative to other auto part suppliers. There is a long, established history of quality products. There is a diverse product base within automotive and for non-automotive customers, US and internationally. There is core of good people remaining, but time will tell how effective they will allowed to be. Several US and overseas operations. Reasonable compensation and benefits, but it is unclear of the future of present benefit levels. Probably an ideal scenario for a strong individual to come in, lead, and make a difference.
Cons
it is in bankruptcy and being kept on "life-support" mode. It was run into the ground by Harvard MBA types with more ability to "bully and intimidate" than to lead. There is an over-reliance on creating business cases using manufacturing sites in Mexico, China, etc. In many of these scenarios, even if the labor were free, the logistics to support such remote locations is a drain on local staff. At present, the company is in a survival mode, and the mood is heavy and desperate. There is core of good people remaining, but it is not clear if the leadership will force them out as well.
Advice to Senior Management
Take responsibility for cleaning up the tangled mess left by the GM legacy. Admit your mistakes, make changes, and cease distracting employees with slogan-of-month quality poster contests. Clear out the nested red tape and phony quality & info systems. Learn to lead and be honest & open in doing so.
