    Pros

The students and parents are warm and supportive. It is very rewarding to watch students learn and grow.

    Cons

There is not much support from immediate supervisors. They would rather search for the perfect "fit", than give constructive feedback and training.

    Advice to Management

Discourage the idea of the perfect "fit" and encourage supervisors to find their employees' strenghts

  2. Special Education structural changes on an annual basis have resulted in job loss every year

    Pros

The kids are great! I enjoyed the professionalism, intelligence and quick response of one of the four departments I worked with. That particular department provides relevant training, support, peer groups and makes themselves available to come to the job site even though they are extremely short staffed.

    Cons

My particular job gave me four different "masters", This year alone I received 3 different curricula to implement, only one of which was even moderately appropriate for the age, ability and linguisitic levels of my students.

    Advice to Management

Support your Special Education teachers by providing relevant training. Requiring teachers to sit through hours (96 this year) of professional development that does not address their student population is not an efficient use of time or resources.
