I worked at Dept of HHS Administration for Children and Families

Pros

I worked as a summer intern in 2008 and the pay was definitely the best part of the job. With almost no work experience, I started off at $12/hr.

Cons

There was almost always nothing to do. Most of my time was spent trying to look busy and when I was actually given work, it was just busy work.

Advice to Management

Make sure there is always something for the interns to do.

    Pros

You can learn a great deal about the inner workings of a federal agency that runs important programs for low-income families. Flexible schedule and good benefits and pay.

    Cons

Some folks with terrible work ethic. Bosses that are afraid to rock the political boat. Bureaucratic systems. Only sycophants get promoted and the politicals bring in friends and give them high level federal jobs.

    Advice to Management

Political level -- look for the good civil servants and give them opportunities to do something new and innovative. They understand the bureaucracy and can help you maneuver it. SES - learn how to manage up.
