No surprises here as they tell you in training how it really is working as a direct care staff.

I have been working at Devereux full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The pros working as a DCP for the Scottsdale, AZ location is that you get to work with awesome kids and for the most part co-workers. Everyone tries to be a good co-worker and have your back when it comes to your safety and when having to put a client into safety restraints. As a new DCP the other DCP's will try to show you the ropes and teach you how to handle different escalated situations that arise. Its a great team effort. Devereux offers decent medical insurance but expect to pay up to $400 per month for family coverage. The best part about working for Devereux besides the kids is the generous leave package.

    Cons

The cons to working as a DCP for the Scottsdale, AZ location is really some of your co-workers. Some will talk down to you, lie about you and just generally be disrespectful towards you and most of the time its in front of the clients. A lot of employees particularly the DCP's are simply tired and burnt out. Devereux Scottsdale mandates a double shift on either a Saturday or Sunday for DCP's.

Management claims its to ensure coverage on the weekends which makes sense but since they are always short staff because of staff quitting and since pool staff always cover available shifts management could really eliminate this mandatory double shift.

Your salary is very low for the type of work you are doing as a DCP but shift differentials are available up to $2 per hour and OT is always available.

In summary, some co-workers and the low salary are the cons to working at Devereux.

Just make sure you document everything and report any mistreatment through the chain of command including the confidential employee hot line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Scottsdale, AZ management needs to have a training class for employees to remind them how to treat others. Increase the starting salary although somewhat fair now by Arizona standards it could be raised at least another $1-$2.

I have been working at Devereux full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Multiple shifts to choose from
    Always hiring
A lot of vacation and sick time

    Cons

    Stressful and dangerous at times
    Poor pay
    Often mandated
    Frequent schedule changes
    Management is petty and unsupportive
High turnover causes extra burden on staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase staffing by increasing wages and reduce redundant paperwork
Have a more specific disciplinary procedure so that managers cannot fire people due to personal dislikes (current policy is so vague that one person is fired for 2 med errors while another person is fired after 3 - inconsistency leads to fear/discontent)

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
