I have been working at Devon Energy

Pros

Great company and people
* great pay
* opportunities for some to advance
* invests in their people

Cons

Big "programs of the month" eroding their edge
* seems like a different big initiative each year
* consultants everywhere, then they go away, then more come back
* becoming like all the other big corporations, which is a shame

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look internally to ideas, improvements, culture, not outside

    I have been working at Devon Energy full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    There are many improvements to made in all aspects of the business. I find this enticing as an employer, as there are many projects underway and plenty of work to do. The people are very nice and very professional. The building is great and the offices are more than satisfactory. Accommodations such as the parking garage, dry cleaning, car wash, food court, and gym just add to the positive work environment. I don't know of many employers in Oklahoma that offer such accommodations.

    Cons

    Promoting from within often times motivates individual contributors to work harder and learn new things. However, I have seen more leadership positions filled from outside than from within. This is a shame, as there are many competent employees that have aspirations for leadership. You have to know the right people to further your career towards management if that is your career aspiration. Change is good, we've all heard many things about change. However, Devon seems to change (change organizational structure, change goals, etc.) for the sake of change. The work environment is like the Oklahoma weather - if you don't like it just wait a few months and it'll change. This is less than motivating for most employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Communicate goals clearly and holistically from top down. Over communicate goals for that matter and define success so that is applicable, visible, and understandable for all levels of employment (Top to bottom). I believe Devon would benefit from a culture aimed at promoting from within. As mentioned above, most leadership positions are hired outside of Devon.

    Feelings and personal perceptions seem to be more important the results. This is a shame. It is almost more beneficial to you if people like you and you "drink the tea" rather than delivering results and possibly stepping on a few toes to accomplish business goals.

    I have been working at Devon Energy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Overall an amazing company that genuinely tries to keep their employees happy, motivated and content with good R&R programs. Employees are encouraged to eat healthy and work out at the fitness facilities and friendly atmosphere all around.

    Cons

    IT is an exception and treated as a step-child.contractors have more job security than full time employees after the accenture-devon partnership.there is a hint of xenophobia towards foreigners, a lot of brown nosing and old school politics where you have these group of people who don't mingle with/associate with others who are not part of their "inner circle", its funny because these are the people who first jump ship to continental resources at the drop of a hat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Please value your employees and ya'll need to ensure that HR is not a joke but has control within IT to affirm everyone is being treated equally and fairly by EOE laws. I have seen some good hard working people being booted at Christmas season with no explanation/warning when a lot of slackers having managed to hang around for years without adding any value.
